Wejście.

Na początek trochę włókienniczej archeologii. Kamienne ciężarki tkackie do krosna pionowego i miecz tkacki z czasów wikińskich.
// A bit of textile archaeology as a starting point – stone loom weights and weaving sword from Norse period.

Poniżej przedmioty XVIII- i XIX-wieczne. Grzebienie do czesania wełny (szetl. kems), czółenko z cewką wykonaną z kości owcy, wrzecionko i specyficzne dla Wysp narzędzie – futeralik wypełniony obciętymi ptasimi piórami służący do zatykania w nim drutów w trakcie dziergania. Wkładano go pod pachę lub za pasek, z prawej strony.

// Items from the 18th and 19th cent. Woolcombs (shetl. kems), shuttle with bobbin made of sheep’s bone, drop spindle and knitting sheath. I found a description of the latter one at Museum’s website: the narrow end of the knitting sheath was tucked into the right side of the knitter’s skirt or apron, and the knitting needle was inserted into the open end among the quills. This freed up the knitter’s right hand, and enabled them to knit much faster.

Słynne szetlandzkie koronki z naprawdę cienkiej przędzy.
// Famous shetland lace made from really fine yarn.

Swetry z pierwszej połowy XX wieku. Co ciekawe, ten z prawej ma na ramionach wydziergane małe swastyki.
//Jumpers from the first half of the 20th cent. What’s interesting, the
one on the right has small swastikas knitted on shoulders.

Przemysłowa produkcja tkanin wełnianych na Wyspach to dość nowa historia, sięgająca początków XX wieku.
// Textile industry in Shetland began to develop in the beginning of the 20th cent.

Na koniec zdjęcie gabloty z modelami do fajnego projektu z początku lat 90. – Shetland Croft Cosy. Projekt zakładał ozdobienie w ten sposób jednego z porzuconych tradycyjnych szetlandzkich domów. Niestety, nie doczekał się realizacji.

// Models for Shetland Croft Cosy Project from the early 90’s. The project’s aim was to cover a traditional Shetland house with knitting. Unfortunately, the idea was abandoned.
